About us

Lightwave

Lightwave was founded by Carol McDermott in 2002, although product development started several years previously. Carol is a New Zealander resident in Britain and France. He has climbed all over the world, with ascents including Shivling, Gasherbrum II, Ama Dablam (solo) and Mount Cook (a dozen times) as well as some epic, unsupported treks in the Karakorum. Carol started Lightwave with the aim of making high-quality, functional and honest gear designed for genuine enthusiasts – people who prefer to think for themselves about the sort of equipment they want, rather than accept the features-driven designs that so many brands insist they need. Lightwave’s functional approach means that all Lightwave products are uncluttered by unnecessary features that add weight and complexity.

Lightwave now has several geographical bases: in addition to our main office and warehouse in North Leeds, we have a European warehouse in Belgium and European offices in southern France.

Lightwave products are manufactured in China, with fabrics and components supplied from the UK, Europe, Korea, China and the USA.
